About the Department
The Department of Botany at Nabajyoti College, Kalgachia, was established in 1983 with the aim of promoting academic excellence in the field of plant sciences. Initially, the department offered a general study of botany, providing foundational knowledge in plant science. The department was affiliated with the Government of Assam in 1992, marking a significant step in its academic growth.
In 1992, the department introduced the B.Sc. Botany Major course, providing students with an opportunity to specialize in plant sciences. Over the years, the department has expanded its academic offerings and research initiatives, striving to cultivate a deep understanding of plant biology, ecology, microbiology, molecular biology and biotechnology.
Today, the department continues to focus on delivering quality education, fostering scientific research, and preparing students for careers in environmental science, research, agriculture, and related fields.
Vision
To be a center of excellence in plant science education and research, nurturing future botanists who can contribute significantly to scientific advancements, environmental sustainability, and biodiversity conservation.
Mission
- To provide students with a strong foundation in botany through engaging lectures, practical sessions, and fieldwork.
- To promote research in diverse areas of plant biology and environmental conservation.
- To encourage students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems in agriculture, horticulture, and biodiversity conservation.
Academic Programs
The Department of Botany offers undergraduate (UG) courses aligned with the curriculum prescribed by Gauhati University and Bhattadev University respectively. Our courses are designed to equip students with in-depth knowledge and practical skills required for pursuing advanced studies or careers in plant sciences. Our courses offered include:
- Sc in Botany (Honours and Regular)
- CBCS Course which was operational till 2022 under affiliation from Gauhati University.
- FUYGP under affiliation from Gauhati University for 2023 Batch.
- FUYGP under affiliation from Bhattadev university form 2024 Batch.
- Certificate course on Mushroom Cutlivation
Career Opportunities
Graduates from the Department of Botany are well-equipped to pursue careers in various fields, including:
- Research and Development (in botanical research, agriculture, and biotechnology)
- Environmental Conservation
- Teaching and Academia
- Plant Biotechnologist
- Forestry and Wildlife Conservation
- Agricultural and Horticultural Development
Extracurricular Activities
In addition to academics, the department is actively involved in extracurricular activities that help foster a spirit of research and environmental awareness. These include:
- Field Trips and Excursions: Regular visits to botanical gardens, national parks, and research institutes for experiential learning.
- Seminars and Workshops: The department organizes seminars, workshops, and guest lectures by renowned botanists and environmentalists to update students on the latest developments in plant sciences.
Infrastructure and Laboratories
The Department of Botany at Nabajyoti College, Kalgachia, is equipped with modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities to support comprehensive learning and research in plant sciences. The department boasts well-equipped laboratories with advanced instruments, including high-quality microscopes, glassware, and various tools essential for studying plant anatomy, physiology, and other botanical aspects. These facilities enable students to gain hands-on experience and practical knowledge in their academic pursuits. The well-maintained laboratories provide a conducive environment for experimentation and exploration in areas such as plant taxonomy, microbiology, biotechnology, and environmental science, helping students develop a deeper understanding of the subject. Other than these facilities, the Department of Botany also has:
- Greenhouse: A controlled environment for growing plants, typically used for crops that require a stable climate. Greenhouses allow for year-round cultivation, protection from harsh weather, and can optimize the growing conditions for various types of plants.
- Mushroom Cultivation Center: This area is dedicated to growing mushrooms under controlled conditions. This could be used for edible mushrooms like shiitake or oyster mushrooms or medicinal varieties.
- Herbarium Room: A herbarium is a collection of preserved plant specimens, typically used for scientific study. The herbarium room would store these specimens, allowing for research and reference on the characteristics of various plants. It could be a valuable resource for studying plant taxonomy, ecology, and conservation.
- Medicinal Garden: A dedicated space where plants known for their healing properties are cultivated. This garden could feature a variety of herbs and plants used in traditional medicine, as well as for pharmaceutical research. It’s an excellent place to study and grow plants which have medicinal applications.
