In Nabajyoti College, the department of Mathematics was opened in the year 1978. Only one post was sanctioned when the college brought under Deficit grant in Aid by the Govt. Second post was sanctioned to this department in the year 1985.

            Appointing a third person against non-sanctioned post, Major Course was started in the year 1995 and from then the department has been offering General Course and Honors Course under Gauhati University in addition to offering H.S. Course under AHSEC. Besides a spacious teachers’ common room, the department of Mathematics has special class room for Honors class and a well-equipped Computer laboratory for practical class. From its conception since 1978 the department of Mathematics is providing a simulatingteaching environment for Undergraduate and Higher Secondary students. It has been enriched with the introduction of Hons Course in 1995 and has successfully produced graduates with Honors in Mathematics

Departmental Library:

 The Department of Mathematics has its own library consisting more than 343 books. Many important books are being donated by the central agency like NAIONAL BOARD OF HIGHER MATHEMATICS. Books are issued to the faculties as well as to Honours students of the department.

Extension Works:

The Department organized several awareness /popular talks on Mathematics Phobia among the students of secondary schools of greater Kalgachia.

Add on Course:

The Department of Mathematics organizes three months certificate course in Computer Applications during the months November to January every year for the UG students of Nabajyoti College. The course is free of cost.

Justification for additional post:Initially the department was in Arts stream only. But now it has the students of Honours and Regular courses both from Arts and Science streams. Atpresent computer oriented practical classes are compulsory for Honours and Regular students of First semester to Six semester. More over the department also has requisite numbers of teacher-students ratio.
