The Department of Philosophy was introduced at the blessed moment of 1971 when the College was established. The department started its major in 2004, and from 2011 students have been getting first class almost every year. Now the department boast of over 200 students.
Mission of the department:
Like many other parts of our country the people of the area where Nabajyoti College is situated is also very poor and backward from various aspects. The Mission of Nabajyoti College Philosophy department is to create a sense of awareness for all-pervasive required change in the way of life. The ceaseless endeavour of our department is to develop manly qualities in the students, so that they can acquire the power and inspirations of feelings of oneness with their fellow men forgetting and overcoming the so-called difference of cult, creed and rituals. In this regard we are determined not to confine our mission within the four walls of college, rather we extend the impression of our department to the different sections of society.
Objectives of Philosophy Department: The followings are the objectives of philosophy department—
- It aims to develop students’ curiosity to acquire pure and clear concepts of every entity with which philosophy is concerned.
- Its aim is to uplift the knowledge and understanding of students, so that they can live with having a strong positive attitude in the way of life.
- Its aim is to cultivate critical thinking skills among students to enable them to analyse complex issues and develop reasoned arguments.
- Its aim is to encourage a deeper understanding of philosophical theories, ethics and metaphysics through rigorous academic study and research.
- Its aim is to contribute students’ personal growth by encouraging self-reflection, open mindedness and the exploration of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge and values.
- Its aim is to prepare students for various career paths by developing skills highly valued in the fields such as law, education, business and academia.
Nabajyoti College Philosophy Department focuses on various branches of philosophy, including–
- Western philosophy that explores the ideas of ancient Greek philosophers like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, as well as modern western philosophers like Hume, Locke, Descartes, Kant.
- Indian philosophy that delves in to the philosophical tradition of India, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism.
- Ethics that examines moral principles, values and theories including applied ethics in the field medicine, environment and technology.
- Logic & Epistemology: Studying the reasoning, argumentation, and knowledge & reality.
- Metaphysics: Investigating fundamental questions about existence, space, time and causality.
Course Curriculum:
The department of philosophy offer undergraduate degree programmes in philosophy, with courses such as:
1st Semester, Bhattadeva University, Bajali (FYUGPT): Fundamental of Western Philosophy (both for Major & Minor), Moral Science (IDC), Yoga Philosophy (SEC)
3rd Semester, Gauhati University (FYUGPT): Introduction to Systems of Indian Philosophy (Minor Core paper), Environmental Ethics (SEC).
5th Semester, Gauhati University (CBCS): Analytic Philosophy, Phenomenology & Existentialism, Philosophy of Upanishad, Philosophy of Geeta and Contemporary Indian philosophy.
The Department has a team of experienced faculty members with expertise in various areas of philosophy. Some of them are involved in research projects, publications and presentations, contributing to the academic community and enriching the learning experience for students.
