Kalgachia, 4th Aug: An awareness programme focusing on the pressing social issues of substance abuse, road safety, and child marriage was successfully organised by Nabajyoti College, Kalgachia, in collaboration with the Police and District Administration, Barpeta. The event aimed at sensitising students and faculty members about the dangers and long-term impacts of these issues on individuals and society.
The programme was presided over by the Principal of the college, Dr. Shahjahan Ali Ahmed, who delivered a warm welcome address, stressing the importance of awareness among the youth to tackle such critical issues.
The first speaker of the event was Mr. BapanKalita, District Transport Officer (DTO), Barpeta, who delivered an informative session on road safety. He highlighted the increasing number of road accidents due to negligence, overspeeding, and lack of awareness among young riders. He encouraged the students to follow traffic rules strictly and spread awareness within their communities to build a safer society.
Following this, Dr.Chandrajit Dohutia, Inspector of Drugs, Barpeta, addressed the alarming issue of drug abuse. His talk delved into the causes of drug abuse, such as peer pressure, curiosity, stress, escapism, lack of awareness, emotional void or trauma, and a false sense of confidence or fun. He elaborated on the health consequences, social and economic impact, and government initiatives undertaken to combat drug addiction. He also spoke about preventive measures and how individuals can work towards overcoming addiction through counselling, rehabilitation, and strong community support.
The event was hosted by Dr.Fakhrul Alom, Head of the Department of Political Science, who ensured the smooth conduct of the sessions and encouraged interactive discussions. The Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Neetu Saharia, Assistant Professor, Department of Assamese, who expressed gratitude to the invited guests, faculty members, and students for their active participation.
The programme witnessed the presence of all teaching faculty members and a large number of students, who showed great enthusiasm and interest in learning about these crucial societal challenges. The awareness programme served as a significant step in educating the youth and empowering them to act responsibly in building a safer and healthier society.
