Introduction:

Floriculture, the art and science of growing and marketing flowers, plays a vital role in the agricultural sector and offers immense potential for economic growth and aesthetic enhancement. Recognizing the significance of floriculture, the R&D Cell of Nabajyoti College (NJC),Kalgachia organized an awareness program on the 29th of September 2023, aiming to educate students, faculty, staff, and enthusiasts about the various aspects of floriculture. The program featured the eminent principal scientist Dr. Dipul Kalita, CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat as the resource person, providing invaluable insights and expertise in the field.

Objective:

The primary objective of the awareness program was to promote an understanding of the principles and practices of floriculture, including cultivation techniques, market trends, and potential career opportunities. Additionally, the program aimed to inspire and motivate participants to explore floriculture as a viable agricultural venture.

Program Highlights:

  1. Inaugural Session:

The program commenced with the felicitation of the dignitaries on the dice viz. Dr. Dipul Kalita (Resource Person),Principal Scientist, CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, Dr. Shahjahan Ali Ahmed(Chairman), Principal, NJC, Sushil Kr. Sarkar, Academic In-charge, Kumaruzzaman, Academic Observer, Azizur Rahman Dewan, Academic Observer, and Samsul Haque, IQAC Coordinator of the college under the hosting of Dr. Hemanta Hazarika, Asst. Prof., Dept.of Chemistry, NJC. This was followed by a warm welcome address by Dr. Shahjahan Ali Ahmed, Principal, who emphasized the importance of floriculture in modern agriculture. This was followed by a brief introduction of the resource person, Dr. Dipul Kalita, a distinguished principal scientist with extensive experience in floriculture research.

  1. Keynote Address:

Dr.Dipul Kalita delivered an insightful keynote address, highlighting the significance of floriculture in today’s agricultural landscape. He shared statistics and trends showcasing the growth and potential of the floriculture industry, both nationally and locally. His  presentation was enriched with visuals and case studies, making the information accessible and engaging for all participants.

  1. Market Analysis and Opportunities:/

Dr.Dipul Kalita provided an in-depth analysis of the market dynamics in the floriculture industry. He discussed consumer preferences, emerging trends, and the potential for value addition through activities like flower arrangement and bouquet making. Participants gained insights in to marketing strategies and business models that could be applied to floriculture ventures.

An interactive question-and-answer session allowed participants to seek clarification on specific aspects of floriculture. Dr. Dipul Kalita addressed queries with precision and provided additional tips and advice based on his extensive expertise.

  1. Sapling Distribution

A diverse range of sapling varieties, carefully selected based on local climate and environmental needs, were made available by there source person for distribution among the participants, faculty members, and students of the college. These included indigenous species like Chrysanthemum, known for their adaptability and resilience.

  1. Vote of Thanks 

The vote of thanks was delivered by the chairperson of the event, Dr. Shajahan Ali Ahmed. After that, the program concluded with the serving of refreshments.

Conclusion:

The Awareness Program on Floriculture at Nabajyoti College was a resounding success, achieving its objectives of educating and inspiring participants about the diverse facets of floriculture. Dr. Dipul Kalita’s expertise and engaging presentation style played a pivotal role in making the program informative and enjoyable.
